If Internet Explorer is forced to always run under Sandboxie (as discussed above), then use the Disable Forced Programs command to disable forced sandboxing before and after visiting the Windows Update web site. When you wish to visit the Windows Update web site, you should run Internet Explorer outside the sandbox. For those unaware, it creates an isolated space (sandbox) on your hard drive that you may execute files in that cannot interact with the underlying system. Sandboxie is a great tool to have in your computer's security arsenal. Don't know if it still works: OS X has a built-in sandbox feature for applications, which can restrict their access to certain parts of the system. Another possibility is outlined here in an article from 2010. You may run fseventer or dtrace (Mac OS X) or other tools (Win/Linux) without interference of your real OS.
